Welcome to Mars

Singing Duo Raises Money for Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society

Event hosts Judy and Bruce Wing invite you to enjoy a musical evening with guest performers Dave and Cheryl Dunwoodie at the upcoming 1st Tuesday Fundraiser to be held at the Mex Pub on September 7th at 7:30PM. Avid animal lovers and fundraising supporters, the Dunwoodies have chosen the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (M.A.R.S.) to receive the proceeds of cash donations collected as admission. MARS is a local non-profit group that works to provide wildlife rescue services and education to the public on
conservation and other issues that affect local wildlife species. People can also bring non-perishable food items as a donation in support of the Comox Valley Food Bank Society, a service that has been helping local families make ends meet for over 25 years.

Dave and Cheryl Dunwoodie have shared a lifetime on stage performing with a band called "My Guys" at pubs, weddings, conventions and corporate parties on the lower mainland as well as on international tours in the US, Australia, France, Germany, Greece and Thailand. Dave started playing professionally at the age of 16; Cheryl, a late bloomer, started singing professionally at the age of 25. One of their first ever out of town gigs was at the Mex Pub in the spring of 1980. "Interesting how things come full circle, and great to see the Mex still here and vibrant all these years later," says Cheryl.

In 2003, the couple wandered back to Courtenay, looking for a to describe their music Cheryl smiles. "Our style is a mixture of 50's, 60's, R&B, and country. We have a lot of fun when we entertain and don't take ourselves too seriously. In the diva ballads category we cover Patsy Cline to Annie Lennox and lots of points in between!"

The evening will support the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society, a group dedicated to the rescue, care, and rehabilitation of raptors (eagles, owls, hawks, osprey), songbirds, waterfowl, and mammals such as bats, raccoons, and mink. These injured or sick animals and birds are rescued from all over the northern part of Vancouver Island from Courtenay to Gold River, Port Hardy and Alert Bay as well as the northern Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast. Many of their patients during the spring and summer months are young and vulnerable, e.g., baby birds, seal pups, and fawns. Like other volunteer groups, MARS volunteers donate hours not only to meet the group's objectives, but also spend a great deal of time and energy fundraising to pay for operating expenses. Events like these that are initiated by others in the community are much appreciated.

"The 1st Tuesday Fundraiser" is an ongoing concert series initiated and hosted by Judy and Bruce Wing, and sponsored by the Mex Pub. The series features local musicians supporting local causes on the 1st Tuesday of each month. For more information please visit www.judyandbruce.com or www.mexpub.ca.
